In Williamsburg and Greenpoint, Brooklyn
neighbourhoods with an industrial history, some concrete warehouse
are turned into luxury housing and artists studios. We propose a
different option which doesn’t consist of filling-in windows
in the existing openings. The concrete structure is considered to
be the Le Corbusier “bottle rack” or the Yona Friedman
framework, in which prefabricated cells and vegetation can be easily
inserted while accommodating the allowed weight and the height of
the ceiling. For a better view towards Manhattan, the modules will
be placed at the western side and will be added together in the
order every inhabitant desires, except the kitchen and bathroom,
which are fixed. The other rooms will be able to be moved on rails,
like a telescope, toward Manhattan.
When the modules are detached from the structure, the air is allowed
to circulate.
To get natural light to all rooms, there will be an open courtyard
in the center of the structure.
The rain water will be recycled to water the plants on every floor.
